Newly Published Standards for Six Sigma Belts

OSU's Center for Operational Excellence Responds to Industry VoC

OSU Fisher College of BusinessWhat is a Black Belt?  If you've googled this question, you've found a wide array of certification practices available on the market. Some commercial providers offer BB certification without ever completing a real project; corporate in-house certification practices tend to require completion of multiple projects.

"Great technical competency does not necessarily translate to project leadership," states Peg Pennington, Executive Director at the Fisher College of Business Center for Operational Excellence at The Ohio State University.  In the past year, the Center for Operational Excellence (COE) has worked with a council of academic faculty, industry leaders, and member companies to develop standards for Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and Green Belt certifications that reflect both practice and theory.  These standards were developed for general industry reference and are now available for public review and comment.  Review COE's newly posted Belt Standards.

Do Serious Games Work?  Results from Three Studies

Game controllerIn this published study for the Department of Defense, Dr. Richard Blunt reports that over $200,000,000 was spent on game-based learning over a two-year period based on the general understanding that interactive learning games "support" learning and are enjoyable to students.  But where's the empirical data?

With the objective of quantifying the return-on-learning (ROL), three studies were conducted at an east coast university to examine the difference in academic achievement between students who did and did not use video games in learning. The findings show that classes using the game had significantly higher scores on a battery of standardized tests than those classes that did not use the game.  The results held true over all demographic groups except one.  Read the article from eLearn Magazine.

Recommended Reading:  The Drunkard's Walk

The Drunkard's WalkNo, we're not referring to Bourbon Street on Fat Tuesday.  We're suggesting something a bit more cerebral in the form of Leonard Mlodinow's book, The Drunkard's Walk:  How Randomness Rules Our Lives

The book is an entertaining and easy-to-read introduction into the development and application of probability theory.  Meet famous mathematicians such as Bernoulli, Laplace and Pascal along with some lesser known, unlikely probability statisticians, a.k.a. routine gamblers.  You will gain a good understanding of concepts such as regression to the mean and the law of large numbers.  You'll also enjoy the real life illustrations such as Apple Computer making its iPod shuffle sequences less random in order to seem more random.  The Drunkard's Walk is available at Amazon.com.

Toolbox Tutorial:  Pareto Charts

Pareto ChartThe first step to solving any problem is to decide what to work on - prioritizing. Every organization has limited resources, so setting priorities correctly to align actions with intentions is a necessary foundation for success.

One of the simplest ways to establish priorities is to construct a Pareto chart showing relative values. The theory behind the Pareto Chart originated when an Italian economist named Vilfredo Pareto created a formula representing the uneven distribution of wealth.  Dr. J. M. Juran later started applying this principle to defect analysis - separating the "vital few" from the "trivial many", and called it the "Pareto Chart".  Read more and see an example from the service industry.

QA on Break at the Olympics

Last one standing wins

As we watch this new set of Olympians strive for perfection, we can't help but recall the snapshots of mishaps from prior years.  Remember short track speed skater Steven Bradbury in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games?  He was so far behind that he cleared the field wipe-out and took home a gold medal for Australia.   Watch the archived video clip.  Déjà vu for post-recall auto industry?

Bradbury may have been the most decorated, but there are other "low lights" that stick in our memory banks.  Read "Ten Biggest Blunders in Olympic History".
