Webcast: Intrusive Coaching - Boosting Belt Capability |
|
UW-M and Lenovo align e-Learning and individualized coaching
|
|
You can’t teach a kid to ride a bike sitting in his seat in a classroom. Teaching Lean Six Sigma techniques carries the same challenge — students have to transform their ‘head knowledge’ into skills and abilities. Trainers and coaches often struggle with how to best mentor students through this transformation, especially across dispersed environments. Lenovo and the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee have successfully overcome this dilemma by freeing up classroom time with high impact e-Learning and re-focusing instructors on structured, individualized coaching.
Join our Webcast on Dec. 3rd at 2 p.m. EST as Dr. Diane Reddy, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Keith Schellenberger, Lean Six Sigma Consultant working at Lenovo, share their experiences in implementing intrusive coaching models. Learn how intrusive coaching can personalize e-Learning, increase knowledge retention and boost Belts’ productivity and project completion rates. Click here for more information and to register.
Case Study in Blended Learning
Bridgestone Americas reduces training costs by 25%
This case study is included in The Blended Learning Playbook: Using Lean Six Sigma Methods to Improve Lean Six Sigma Training. Visit our Web site to learn more about the Playbook and how you can receive a copy of this new publication from MoreSteam.
Bridgestone Americas designs, manufactures and sells passenger, light truck, commercial truck, agricultural and off-road tires to the original equipment and replacement markets. Bridgestone began their Six Sigma journey in July of 2004, sparked by the need to drive data-based decision making throughout the organization and the awareness that they could improve in all facets of their business by working smarter, armed with the data that resulted from our processes. Four years later, the leaders at Bridgestone saw Blended Learning as a way to simultaneously optimize the effectiveness and decrease the cost of training resources.
According to Nick Turk, Director of Six Sigma, the primary incentive in moving to Blended Learning was to maximize Master Black Belt coaching time and minimize Master Black Belt burnout from training. While a more exact use of training resources was compelling, what sold management was the reduction in travel costs, Turk added. Read the full case study.

See What's New in EngineRoom® 5.0 |
|
MoreSteam.com just released EngineRoom 5.0, MoreSteam’s latest contribution to its suite of user-friendly data analysis tools. Featuring an interactive Design of Experiments (DOE) wizard, EngineRoom 5.0 brings DOE capability to process improvement professionals using familiar software and at a game-changing price. EngineRoom 5.0, based on Microsoft® Excel®, guides practitioners step-by-step through the process of experimental design selection and analysis using MoreSteam’s innovative DOE Wizard.
Mark Anderson, Principal at Stat-Ease, Inc., has compiled a list of very simple experiments. They don't require any specialized equipment and offer some quick, fun practice. The tests listed would be suitable for a Lean Six Sigma classroom demonstration or completion on an individual basis. Check out the list and see if you might have started honing your DOE skills back in elementary school!
Recommended Reading: How to Measure Anything
Have you ever been challenged to measure the “immeasurables” on a project such as customer satisfaction, organizational flexibility, employee morale, technology risk, or technology ROI? In his book, How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business (2007), Douglas Hubbard busts the myth that certain things can’t be measured.
Everything is measurable, he says, but we have to understand the uncertainty, risk, and the value of the information surrounding how to measure things. Hubbard suggests ways to reduce uncertainty by using various methods of observation including random sampling and controlled experiments. Case studies and detailed examples are cited across a variety of industries.
This book would be a strong addition to the reference shelf of any MBB, BB, or deployment leader. Check it out. Available at Amazon.com.
Lean Six Sigma Sound Bytes of Success from Hertz
"Through lean six sigma projects like strategic fleet management, back office reengineering, organizational redesign and utilization improvements we have led the industry in cost management. Year-to-date we achieved $535 million of incremental consolidated process improvements and we think we will capture at least another $85 million by the end of the year, which will exceed our target of $570 million for all of 2009."
- Mark Frissora, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
